The title of this piece is correlated perfectly to the musical time signature. Characteristic of the sensitivity built into every moment of this groundbreaking movie experience.
My father ended up with dementia, but for his last five years he and I sang this song every week. He missed my mother so much, and they both loved the South Pacific soundtrack. Such a beautiful little song! ❤
If you read the book, Mitchner called the islanders, Tonkinese. In reality they were Vietnamese and they hated the French. At the time, the French ruled Vietnam. At the time of the play, the Viet Minh had just begun to fight. They wanted their freedom. We lost 58,000 killed, much of our national treasure trying to tell the Vietnamese how to run their lives.
If JFK hadn't been assassinated the Viet Nam war wouldn't have happened. It was a coup d'état by the military industrial complex and we haven't been at peace since.
In this version it looks the girl is older than her brother but in the 2001 I feel like they were about the same age which made me think there were twins.
A beautiful ending for Nellie, Emile, and the kids. I especially love how the kids just go on eating as the two adults hold hands; it shows that they are fully accustomed to Nellie and they are already satisfied having her be a part of the family, so her being next to their father just feels right to them, not abnormal at all. This finale also makes me wonder about the future of Liat and Bloody Mary. Liat stood up for herself and refused to marry anyone other than Cable. Did she settle for the other guy her mother wanted her to marry? Was she pregnant with her and Cable’s baby? I feel that the latter is likely, in which case Emile and Nellie certainly helped her and Mary take care of the child in every way they could out of obligation since they both were close with Cable. If Cable’s family were ever to hear of their grandchild - a piece of him that was left - it might set them on the path to overcoming their prejudice.
BarBara Luna played Ngane in the original Broadway production and sang this. By the time the film was made she was playing the older role of Liat (Frances Nuyen in the film) on stage.
